About Us

Formed in 1987, Naturally Slate has been committed to high quality slate installations for over 25 years. With a passionate, highly skilled team and an unrivaled work ethic, Naturally Slate has been able to position itself as a leader in slate installation and maintenance in South Africa.

NS imports most of its slate from Spain, France and Brazil.   The slates come in 4 sizes depending on project requirements and is laid in the traditional or conventional method, which gives a triple overlap (see Spanish Slate – Products and Services).  Local slate is mined in the Northern Province and stored at our premises in Ottery.  This slate is laid using the Peterloo system (see Mazista Slate)

No job is too small or too big.  We have a permanent work force of over 20 roofers many of whom have been with the company since 2003.  All work is done in-house as we do not sub-contract to any other companies.  We work closely with architects in the design and development of the complete roof structure.  We are committed to health and safety practices and are BIBC compliant, and member of the Master Builders Association.

Geology & History of Slate

Slate is a common rock type found in most countries of the world.  It is essentially a low-grade metamorphic rock, made up of fine grained silts and muds.  Slate is predominately associated with sedimentary belts but some slate is of igneous (volcanic) origin.  Where slate is the most abundant rock type (slate belts)it is often mined commercially.  Major areas include France, Spain, Wales, Brazil, China and South Africa.

Slate has been used in the building industry for thousands of years.  Its simple extraction and working into a useable product means that it has a low carbon imprint and therefore ecologically acceptable when compared to other roofing materials.
