Naturally Slate was started in 1987 by Andrew Whitaker. He qualified as a geologist at UCT in 1983 and moved to London where he worked as a carpenter and roofer. In 1992 he moved to France and spent 10 years restoring old buildings and learning the slate trade.
He returned to South Africa in 2002 and started to apply the knowledge he had learnt in Europe.
